1. Use The Extra Time That You Have For Yourself To Your Advantage.
With all of the holiday hullabaloo now over, you now have some time regroup, take stock and reflect on your life. What do you like about your life? What would you like to change? Compile your list with big and small things. Don’t hold back. Set some attainable but aspirational goals.
2. Don’t Overlook The Small Goals That You would Like To Accomplish.
Is it time to clear out some clutter from your life? Do you want to finally get that hall closet cleaned out? Perhaps the time is right to empty the junk drawer and toss out the old dried up rubber bands, endless supply of twist ties and all of those expired coupons that you have been saving? Maybe you can now finally complete that personal or special work project that your boss has been chasing you to do.
- It’s a good time to sit down and make a list of all those little tasks you want (and need) to get done. Having the list handy will help you stay focused and stay on track with your goals.
- When you do get something done, the sense of accomplishment goes a long way when you draw a line through an achieved goal.
Getting into the habit of completing some of the small stuff is good practice that allows you to ease into managing and accomplishing some of your bigger tasks and goals.
3. Focus On Yourself Too.
Now is the time to hone in on your personal desires and goals. We are all allowed to be a little selfish, once in a while. What can you do for some self-improvement or even some guilty pleasure? Perhaps you want to exercise more, learn something new or spend more quality time with your children. Ponder how you might go about making the changes that you seek. Start with a list and then make the plan to take the steps that lead toward accomplishing some of your more personal goals.
4. Pursue That Interest Of Yours.
Review your bucket list. Make a bucket list! We all have interests of ours that we hope to “get to” someday. Maybe it’s the time to accomplish some of the smaller items on your list. Since you’ve got some down time now, why not go for it? Delve in to a subject that you’ve been curious about or start the photography or martial arts class that you’ve longed to start.
- If you’re not sure what you’re interested in, do some research. Visit a book store or your local library, and browse some books and magazines or look in the newspaper. You are sure to find at least a few topics or activities of interest that you’d like to learn more about. You will have a real reason to spend time doing those endless internet searches.
5. Have A Dinner Party or Gam Night.
You’ll have plenty of time to plan and prepare for an event with people you really that you really want to be with. The chances are that you are not the only when suffering from some post holiday blues. Both you and your guests will enjoy spending the evening together and the moods of all should be lifted.
6. Renew And Refresh Your Surroundings.
Do you feel like re-arranging the furniture in a room or two? Maybe you want to paint the walls or hang up some new pictures? If so, it can also be a good time for some de-cluttering. We all have things that we can toss out or donate. Do it! Re-decorating and rearranging your surroundings is a good way to go in to the new year with a fresh start and banish the holiday blues at the same time.
Does your man cave need an update?
- Focusing on your home, the immediate surroundings and any changes you want to make to them will help you clear your mind of any post holiday doldrums.
7. Re-Connect With An Old Friend.
There can be something really great about reaching out to someone that you have not been in contact with for a long time. Getting back in touch with an old friend again can offer good feelings and good times for both of you. It might be a friend from your old neighborhood, a former college roommate or a past co-worker you were once great friends with.
Do you have some old pictures that you can share them them? Of course, with the internet and social media it is easier to find them. But once you do, make a connection, make it a real connection. Plan to meet in person and not to just have another name added to your FaceBook friends list.
Conclusion
If the post-holiday blues are getting you down, and yes, there are many of us that do have them, know that your are not alone. But you also need to know that there are things that you can do to help get you through the post-holiday winter months As we always suggest, it is up to you and it is your choice of what efforts and actions you can take to do the things that will give you reason and motivation to rise above the post-holiday blues.
You can sit around and mope or you can make the time productive worthwhile for yourself. Taking the quality time during this period to figure out what you really want to do and accomplish during the year ahead cannot only, raise your spirits, but, also, get you excited and upbeat for the coming year.
Don’t waste the time, put it to beneficial use.
