We have all heard about diabetes and we all probably have an idea that it is realted to sugar in our blood and either a lack or over prodcution of insulin in our body.

There Are Two Types Of Diabetes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes
  • Type 2 Diabetes

People with Type 1 Diabetes do not produce insuin at all. Basically the immune system mistakes the the healthy cells actually produced by the body’s for foreign invading cells. The immune system of people with Type 1 Diabetes attack and destroy the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. With these cells destroyed, the body is unable to produce insulin.

Since the body has destroyed the inslilin making cells, at this time, there is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes. The desease can only be managed.

In Type 2 Diabetes insulin is produced but the bodies of affeced people are unable to use or manage the insulin that is produced by their body. People diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes have insulin resistance.

Although genetics and evironment can play a factor, Type 2 Diabetes is much more a lifestyle desease. We can do something about preventing or avoiding Type 2 Diabetes, altogether. More often than not, Type 2 Diabetes can be managed without anything more than a eating a proper diet and exercise. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention states that about 10% of the American population has diabetes, with more than 90% of those cases being type 2 diabetes. And more than 60 million Americans are expected to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes by the year 2060, according to a study published in Population Health Metrics. So, let’s take a look at all there is to know about type 2 diabetes.

  • Age: Type 2 diabetes is most common in middle-aged Americans, with 17.5% of those aged 45 to 64 and 26.8% of those 65 and older having type 2 diabetes (CDC).
  • Obesity: Most cases of type 2 diabetes appear in overweight or obese Americans, with about 90% of diagnoses meeting these criteria (WHO).
